Carrie Gray, Winter20 Fellow

Having concluded our third Fellowship cohort (first women-only cohort) one month ago, we are catching up with the Fellows to share their experience of the program.

With a background in management consulting, Carrie is a growth-focused operations leader with global scaling experience, including growing a company from 20 to 80 people and taking a company to a successful exit. Her distinctiveness lies in supporting a global leadership team to grow revenue while directing the operational activities. Functionally her expertise lies in strategy, planning, execution, HR, marketing and operations, having operated in the executive recruitment, professional services and financial services industries in Australia, UK, Indonesia and Singapore.  Given her combination of commercial acumen, operational strength and leadership capability, she was well positioned to land the Executive Assistant role to the Chief Experience Officer and the Head of Craft Practices & Learning at Atlassian.

What was The Fellowship is to you?

I learnt three simple rules on the Fellowship:

  1. If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it
  1. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no
  1. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place

After 12 years abroad working in London, Jakarta and Singapore, the Fellowship was a space to explore and unlock my fit into the Australian startup / scale up tech ecosystem. From engaging and insightful conversations with a diverse group of mentors I was able to identify which industry, company and career path aligns best with what I am great at.

The Fellowship was a game changer in supercharging my Aussie network and giving me my ‘tribe’, Startmate’s first all female, ambitious and inspiring cohort.

Over the 12 weeks the Fellowship we experienced:

  • 25 x Ask Me Anything sessions covering Startup Australia, getting into Product, getting into VCs, goal setting, personal development, productivity, financial modelling, impact investing and software development
  • Mentor Roulette sessions with legendary Tech leaders
  • Startmate ‘virtual’ Silicon Valley trip with Bugcrowd, Zendesk, Zoox, NexGen Venture Partners, Happy Inspector, Zetta Venture Partners, Boost VC, Nexus VC & Homebrew
  • Amazing mindfulness sessions with Peter Huynh
  • Along with lots of knowledge sharing and feedback sessions with the Startmate team and the most fantastic female Fellows!

Would you recommend it to others?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to fully immerse themselves in the Australian startup ecosystem and build genuine relationships.

As long as you have a willingness to share, learn and be open to feedback, the Fellowship can suit all: from rising stars, senior executives, expats returning to Australia and people wanting to return to work after a career break. In essence, the more of yourself you give in the Fellowship the more you’ll get out of it.

What were the biggest outcomes for you on The Fellowship?

I got my trifecta:

  1. I now work for the most sensational tech company, Atlassian
  1. I have my dream job supporting Jurgen Spangl, Atlassian’s Chief Experience Officer as well as Sarah Atkinson, Head of Craft Practices & Learning
  1. I have the most valuable and lifelong network of genuine and inspiring minds

Carrie - we loved having you in the Fellowship cohort and wish you all the best in your new role at Atlassian! Excited to see the huge impact you are going to have.
