Startmate has tripled this year.

We’ve funnelled 700+ incredibly ambitious operators into startups. We’ve took the title of 'most active investor in ANZ'. We’ve grown from a team of 3 to 15 FTE since this time last year. We’ve launched a 4 new programs. And (who could forget) we were recently on the front cover of The Australian’s Top 100 innovators. 


But we’re just getting started. 


We’re looking for 4 more exceptional individuals to join us on our mission to make Australia and New Zealand the best place in the world to start a startup.

We're looking for a:

  1. Head of Programs;
  2. Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR);
  3. Fund Operations Associate; and
  4. Community Events Coordinator.

These roles are fully remote, from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand. But if you're bored of working at home we currently have an office in Melbourne, with satellite offices in Sydney and Auckland.

🎈 Role details

🧢 Head of Programs: apply here by Nov 26, 2021

  • Salary Range: $120k-$150k + super + equity + carry in the funds
  • Reporting into CEO Michael Batko


The Head of Programs will lead the future of Startmate’s founder, operator and investor programs by creating an exceptional participant experience.

This is a big role as you will be the custodian of our programs. You'll do this through leading a team of 4-15 FTE who are currently managing 6 programs, scaling to ~15 programs by the end of 2022. You will be defining the strategic direction of which 5-10 new programs to launch in 2022 and then leading the launch and impact of those programs. You’re going to be a key player in forming the startup ecosystem in ANZ.


Some examples of the kind of work you’ll do in this role

  • Strategy: Work with the CEO to decide on the roadmap for the scope and timing of future programs. This will rely on strategic and data driven considerations.
  • Experience design: Define how the user journey looks like for a program participant from the day they find out a program, through to application, selection process, program all the way to becoming an alumni. Work closely with the Operations team to codify this journey at scale and translate it into human experience with your team of Program Leads.
  • Manager:You will be leading a large team of Program Leaders who are community builders at heart, each responsible for hundreds of participants in their programs across the year.


Position requirements

  • Prioritisation: You can relentlessly prioritise the sequence of workflows and programs we implement.
  • Team empathy: You are a natural people leader who is comfortable leading a high performing team of 10+
  • Customer empathy: You have a love for creating great experiences and magical moments for people at scale. You predict unintended consequences and design to achieve the optimal participant outcome.
  • Resilience: You will have a team of 10+ FTE managing a community of 1,000-2,000 participants in the first year. You are resilient in coaching your own team to manage the community, but also ready to step in to work through community problems.

  • Reporting into Head of Programs 


The Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) will manage our Founder and Mentor experience throughout the Selection and Program phase of the Accelerator and Founders Fellowship

You will be the face of the Accelerator and Founders Fellowship. This means you’re the first touch point for Founders and Mentors throughout the selection process and program. You’ll be a sherpa to the Founders to guide them on the right path and connect them with our Mentors, whilst crafting an exceptional experience for both Founders and Mentors.


Here is a brief overview of some examples of work you will commandeer:

  • Selection process : Responsible for clear communication to both Founders and Mentors throughout the process whilst optimising to find the most ambitious Founders.
  • Program: Delivering an exceptional experience for Founders and Mentors where Founders go on to succeed during and post program.
  • Mentoring: You know when to pour cold water and push but also when to say that you don’t know the answer. You are a natural matchmaker and connector of Founders to Mentors who can help them.


Position requirements

Your background is less important than the key skills, which might include:

  • Founder empathy: You deeply care about Founders and their success.
  • Communication: You are a clear verbal and written communicator at scale. You are able to manage communication from 100+ Founders and 100+ Mentors at any given time.
  • Feedback: You are not afraid to say it how it is. You thrive on getting feedback as well as giving constructive feedback which will not always be easy to deliver.

  • Salary Range: $70k + super + equity + carry in the funds
  • Reporting into Head of Operations and Finance Ben Vickers


The Fund Operations Associate will help us massively scale our investments into Australia and New Zealand’s best startups and founders.

Currently we have the largest portfolio (170+ companies) in Australia and New Zealand and every year we invest in more startups than most funds do in a decade. Plus (spoiler alert) we are launching some exciting new funds that will change the startup landscape across Australia and New Zealand.


Here is a brief overview of some examples of work you will commandeer (don’t worry if you have never done any of this before, we can teach you everything you need to know): 

  • Experience management: Ensuring every interaction with every startup founder and investor is a great experience.
  • Portfolio investments: Coordinating the investment process into all our new portfolio companies, as well as coordinating further investments into the existing portfolio.
  • Fundraising: Coordinating the raising of new funds, and the onboarding of all our investors.
  • Reporting: Assist with the fund valuation process and reporting to our investors.
  • Legal : Working closely with our legal advisors to ensure that every transaction is legally sound.


Position requirements

Your background is less important than the key skills, which might include:

  • Familiarity with the legal workings of start-up transaction docs, and fundraising to invest in startups.
  • Some interest or experience dealing with startups (this could be in your current role, past roles, being involved in accelerator programs or other startup communities).
  • Exposure to accounting, finance, and/or valuations.
  • An understanding of and ability to navigate the regulatory frameworks within which Startmate operates.
  • Advanced communication skills both internally and externally and maintaining a hospitality mindset in dealing with all stakeholders.
  • Fantastic at creating and energising by improving, monitoring and implementing internal processes.


🎉 Community Events Coordinator: apply here by Nov 26, 2021

  • Salary Range: $64k + super + equity + carry in the funds
  • Reporting into Senior Media Associate Bronte McHenry


The Community Events Coordinator will activate and engage the Startmate community and broader startup ecosystem through a year-round events program, spanning both virtual and IRL (across Australia and New Zealand) environments. These events are a pivotal part of our media and outreach strategy, and contribute to the broader company vision of making Australia and New Zealand the best place in the world to build a startup.


Here is a brief overview of some examples of work you will commandeer:

  • Strategy: Creating a highly strategic year-round events calendar to feed targeted leads into the Startmate outreach funnel, including tracking success metrics related to each event.
  • Planning: End-to-end planning and executing large-scale in-person and virtual events and conferences, such as Demo Day.
  • Partnerships: Where relevant, engaging partner organisations or sponsors to support event activities.
  • Team: Working closely with the outreach team to increase opportunities for exposure, and create unique content post-event.
