If you’re building a startup, chances are you’ve heard the term accelerator. It gets thrown around a lot, but what actually is it - and is it worth your time as a founder?

(we might be a liiiiittle biased cause we think they are EPIC)

But let’s break it down…

🚀 What is an accelerator?

A startup accelerator is a short, intensive program (usually 3–4 months) that helps early-stage companies grow faster.

Think of it as a time-compressing machine: mentorship, community, and investor connections delivered in weeks instead of years.

Accelerators typically offer:

  • Investment (usually pre-seed level)
  • Hands-on mentorship from experienced founders and operators
  • A cohort of ambitious peers
  • Exposure to investors at a pitch night

Done right, accelerators shave months (sometimes years) off your company’s trajectory.

💡 Why do founders join?

Most founders join an accelerator for one (or all) of these reasons:

  1. Speed >> Instead of stumbling through trial-and-error, you get curated advice and resources from people who’ve done it before.

  2. Connections >> Investors, customers, talent (the classic: it’s often who you know as much as what you know).

  3. Clarity + Accountability >> The structure forces you to focus, validate with customers, and kill distractions.

  4. Capital (well, sometimes) >> Many accelerators invest upfront and introduce you to follow-on investors.

⚡ How is Startmate different?

All of the above plus…

  • Bespoke mentorship >> Each company is matched with 3 Partner Mentors who invest in the cohort fund so they skin in the game from day one.

  • Customer obsession >> Every week is geared toward validation, traction, and preparing you for a successful raise.

  • Fundraising firepower >> From pitch deck reviews to warm introductions, Startmate acts as your fundraising co-pilot.

  • Network effects >> 5,000+ founders, operators, and investors across ANZ and beyond with strong connections to US based investors and top VCs.

The program runs for 14 weeks and has helped startups like Everbility 4x their revenue in 14 weeks, get Duohub from $0 to $355k ARR and Borne from $0 to $80k revenue in booked stays.

🧐 So, do you need one?

The short answer: “why the heck not?”

If you want sharper focus and faster validation, investor connections to launch you into fundraising and avoid 12 months of going around in circles solo and slow growth by surrounding yourself.

If yes, then an accelerator isn’t a distraction - it’s a shortcut.

🎤 Where to now?

The barrier to entry for founders has never been lower aaand the expectations for excellence have never been higher.
