Program Leader

Role overview

Startmate is looking to hire a Program Leader to help us massively scale our program offering. This Program Leader will be a program generalist, focused on building new communities as well as launching, designing and facilitating the new programs.

They'll build programs from 0 to 1. They'll go from idea to first iteration, run one cohort, capture their learnings and recommend whether we should take the program into a scaled version. These MVP programs will be highly experiential in nature, with the main outcome being to learn as much as possible in the process.

Ultimately, our new Program Leader will play a crucial part in our goal of launching 10 new programs next year and contribute to the broader company mission of making Australia and New Zealand the best place in the world to build a startup.

Key details

  • Apply here by 11.59pm on the 9th of January, 2022 AEDT
  • Salary range: $70k + super + equity + carry in the funds
  • Reporting into Head of Programs
  • This role is remote-first, however, we currently have offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland

Over the past year, Startmate has gone from running one program to five programs across operators, founders and investors. In 2022, we want to triple that again and launch 10 new programs that will allow us to reach new audiences and play a meaningful (and much-needed) role in creating diverse talent pools for the ANZ startup ecosystem.

In this role, you’ll play a fundamental role in launching and running these MVPrograms.

You’ll work closely with...

  • The media team, to access new audiences and funnel them into applying for the programs.
  • The Head of Programs and other Program Leaders, to create the strategy and design the new programs,
  • The ops team, who will support you in creating the back end systems and processes you need to launch the programs.
  • The product team, because a core outcome of Startmate's programs is to help operators land jobs. You’ll sync up with our hiring product team to make sure there is a smooth transition from program to platform.
  • And, of course, the customers, as they are part of the communities we'll be building!

Here are some examples of work you will commandeer

Application and selection: for each of the new programs, we want to work with the top talent from areas that don’t have a natural pathway into tech. It will be your job to work with the media team to identify, attract and select these incredible people

Program design: leaning on our learnings from our other programs, you will help design a world-class experience based on the key program outcomes.

Community building: when the programs are running, you’ll be the centre of gravity for these communities — facilitating sessions, forging meaningful relationships and finding scalable ways to help everyone achieve their goals. The key outcomes here will be people in jobs and learning about the customer segment.

Position requirements

Your background is less important than the key skills, which might include:

Elite communicator: as you will have seen above, this role is going to operate as the coordinator of many different stakeholders and moving parts. We need a confident, proactive communicator who is going to be able to navigate the complexities that come with this.

Customer empathy: our programs regularly have NPS scores of 75+, and while this is ambitious for MVPs, we want you to be the custodian of the communities we are building and represent their best interests. This includes being able to conduct user research and make data-informed decisions.

Scaling and an experimental mindset: this role is highly experimental, so a lot of failure will be inherent to it! You’ve got to be comfortable operating within this ambiguity, being structured in the way you hypothesise, testing these theories and learning from them.

Program knowledge: we would love for you to have some sort of understanding of running programs or managing products, as this will allow you to hit the ground running.

We’re looking for someone who is as passionate as us about making Australia and New Zealand the best places in the world to start and grow a company. You must have a high ownership mentality and the ability to take responsibility for goals and outcomes.

This role is fully remote anywhere in Australia or New Zealand. We currently have an office in Melbourne with satellite offices in Sydney and Auckland.
