Startmate Talent Engine

Hiring is hard. Hiring as a startup is even harder.

Hiring the hungry, the unproven, the non-obvious... Don’t even start.

We've supported hundreds of Fellows to land their dream jobs — 363 to be exact. Now, we plan to help hundreds of thousands. Here's how...

Introducing…

Our new Talent Engine is a platform for startups wanting to build better teams.

It enables startups to source vetted, high-intent Startmate Fellows looking for their next dream role, and to connect their teams with their peers in the community, ultimately driving connectivity across all functions, levels and startup industries.

We are pleased to announce we have already onboarded Finder, x15ventures, Inventia Life Science, Brighte, Qualtrics, Folklore Ventures, 5B and Curious Things onto the platform as our inaugural subscribers.

Our OKRs

At a high level, our OKRs are job placements, cultural shifts through scale and net gain into startups.

Let’s dive a little deeper into what each of these mean.

Job placement

Our dream is to become the first port of call for startups to build a better team.

Our point of difference is our Fellows.

You can post a job anywhere.

However, on the Talent Engine, you can post a job directly to and build relationships with vetted talent who are actively looking for their next thing. As we launch and scale new programs throughout the year (across different functions, industries and more), we continually grow the pool of ambitious Fellows. All have been through a selection process, been through a program and are part of our supportive community for life.

Cultural shift through scale

We can drive cultural shifts by operating at scale and fundamentally shifting the way that Aus and NZ companies hire. Together we can push the boundaries on how we broaden our talent pools and collectively be more creative.

As humans, we are hard-wired to take shortcuts.

For example, to read a resume and mentally tick those boxes: a solid education, startup experience at renowned companies, used to work with one of your friends, and like you, is a marathon runner.

We want to help you think differently and hire those from outside of central casting.

We want to fundamentally change the face and shape of the ecosystem, while ensuring ANZ is the best place in the world to start and grow a company.

Net gain into startups

The hiring product drives economies of scale for companies hiring. We can meaningfully contribute to a net gain of ambitious employees into the sector, and in turn, drive economic growth.

We unearth the hungry, not the proven. We source talent outside of central casting and help them to land their dream role. In turn, we create new pools vs. drive the zero sum game of poaching similar candidates from one startup to the next.

Sure there is a shortage of ‘been there, done that’ startup talent that has seen it all.

But there isn't a shortage of hungry, unproven talent.

The Startmate Fellowship exists to create a net gain of diverse, non-obvious talent in the startup ecosystem.

We encourage startups to consider talent from less obvious places. Widen and deepen the pool. A Pareto improvement. If we all win, you win too.

We actively source and access this talent — from university, corporates, hospitality, healthcare and beyond — and work with them to translate their experience and story into the startup world.

This vetted pool of new talent is ready for you.

How can you get involved?

Our Talent Engine will enable the industry to become one degree of separation from one another. It will be the home where all can coalesce, learn, grow and accelerate impact.
